Janitor AI is a web and mobile platform where adults (18+) chat with user-created AI characters, called bots, in text roleplay. Chats run on its free built-in model (JLLM) or an outside model the user connects. The free tier includes unlimited chats; janitor+, the paid subscription, costs $12.99 billed monthly or $99.00 billed yearly.

It fits an adult who wants interactive fiction for personal use. A business shopping for a work assistant should look elsewhere, because the license is personal and non-commercial.

  • Who runs it: JanitorAI Inc., based in the United States
  • Age: 18 or older only
  • Price: free tier with unlimited chats; janitor+ $12.99 billed monthly, or $99.00 billed yearly ($8.25/mo)
  • Models: free JLLM, your own API proxy, or janitor+ Router billed per token
  • Business use: personal, non-commercial license; commercial use needs written consent
  • Latest change: Terms last updated October 8, 2026; they include janitor+ Router credit rules

I built this guide from Janitor’s help center, Terms of Service, Privacy Policy and plan pages, read on October 20, 2026.

What Janitor AI Is and Is Not

Janitor is a front end: the website and apps where you chat with AI characters, create them, manage settings and switch between language models. The words in each reply come from a model behind it, by default Janitor’s own JLLM (Janitor’s glossary).

So Janitor is not one AI model, and it is not a work assistant for research or reports. It is a character-chat service with a choice of models.

The Janitor homepage claims 15M+ users, and a help center article from August 2025 counted over 1.4 million public bots. JanitorAI Inc. is based in the United States. If the site is only the front end, the next question is what happens between your message and the reply.

How It Works: Bots, Personas, Models and Memory

Each reply comes from the active model reading the bot’s permanent text plus as many recent messages as its context window holds. On JLLM that window holds between 8,000 and 9,000 tokens (token guide).

Permanent text is the bot’s personality and scenario, the chat memory, any advanced prompts and your persona. It travels with every message. A token is a chunk of text: roughly 1,000 tokens equal 750 words.

A bot needs a Personality and an Initial Message; the Scenario field is optional. When the window fills, JLLM drops the oldest messages first, with no warning, so a long chat starts losing names and plot points.

Here is an illustrative memory budget, using a 9,000-token window and two invented bot setups.

Bot setup (permanent tokens)Left for recent chatRecent chat in words
1,5009,000 – 1,500 = 7,500 tokens7,500 x 0.75 = about 5,600
3,0009,000 – 3,000 = 6,000 tokens6,000 x 0.75 = 4,500

Sources: illustrative example; the ratio of 750 words per 1,000 tokens is from Janitor’s glossary, checked October 2026.

Doubling the setup from 1,500 to 3,000 tokens costs 1,500 tokens of recent chat, about 1,100 words the bot can no longer see.

Janitor’s token guide puts most well-made bots under 1,500 permanent tokens and warns that past 2,000 a bot is on thin ice. The character creation guide recommends staying under 2,500 permanent tokens. On JLLM I would aim for the lower figure, because every permanent token is chat the bot cannot remember.

The fix is a short, structured Chat Memory, refreshed with a summary you ask the bot to write as the chat grows (chat memory guide). With the mechanics clear, the next step is a first chat.

How to Start Using Janitor AI

You can start on janitorai.com in any browser or in the official iOS or Android app, and both are free. The steps are the same:

  1. Create an account with your email, or sign in with Google.
  2. Confirm you are 18 or older, as the Terms require.
  3. Pick a public bot, or create one with a personality and a first message.
  4. Set your persona, the character you play.
  5. Chat on the free JLLM; connect another model later if you want one.

On a PC, use janitorai.com in a browser, or install it as a web app. The Terms of Service name janitorai.com, its subdomains and the official iOS and Android apps as the ways in.

The app is free to download and use, and still in beta (app download FAQ).

To meet App Store and Google Play rules, it opens in a restricted “Safe Mode” that hides adult-tagged bots and tunes replies to stay safe for work.

An adult account can change that only on the website, under Settings, Privacy & Display, with the switch labelled “Enable NSFW on Mobile” (app settings FAQ, updated June 27, 2026).

One more gate catches new users: a creator can limit a bot to accounts at least 30 days old. The free account works at once; the question is when paying changes anything.

Is Janitor AI Free? What janitor+ Costs

Yes. The free tier includes unlimited chats with millions of bots, standard chat models and a context limit of around 9k tokens.

Janitor AI pricing page

janitor+ is the paid subscription: $12.99 billed monthly, or $99.00 billed yearly, which the janitor+ plan page shows as $8.25/mo and “Save 36%”. The same page says tax is not included and usage limits apply.

The free option is meant to stay: “We will always keep a free option available for everyone,” the subscription FAQ says.

Paying monthly for a year comes to $12.99 x 12 months = $155.88, $56.88 more than the $99.00 yearly price.

The main upgrade is memory, and Janitor publishes it only as “5x more context”, not as a token count. I would stay free until a long chat visibly forgets, then pay $12.99 for one month before committing $99.00 to yearly billing.

The plan renews automatically until you cancel, and the Terms let Janitor change prices from the next billing cycle after notice. Subscriptions are generally non-refundable, except where the Terms or the law require a refund.

To cancel on the web, go to Settings, Billing, Manage Subscription, which opens Stripe’s billing page. A subscription bought in the App Store or Google Play cannot be cancelled on the web. Either way, janitor+ stays active to the end of the paid period.

Stripe handles web card payments, and Janitor does not see or store card details. The Privacy Policy also names Dulova Investments Limited, of Nicosia, Cyprus, among the affiliates that process payments. janitor+ also opens more model options, which raises the question of which route fits.

Model and API Options: JLLM, Your Own Proxy, or janitor+ Router

You have three ways to power a chat: the free JLLM, your own proxy with an API key from a model provider, or janitor+ Router, billed per token inside Janitor.

Sources: proxy quickstart and janitor+ Router article, checked October 2026.

A proxy is set up inside a chat: the gear icon, then API Settings, then Add Configuration, with a config name, model name, proxy URL and API key. The quickstart compares that key to a password.

The Terms allow this: configuring an API proxy in your settings is not an “unofficial client”. Software that signs in to your account on your behalf, or a modified app, is a material violation.

OpenRouter is the provider Janitor’s quickstart uses. Its limits page caps free model variants at 20 requests per minute and 50 requests per day for accounts with fewer than 10 credits purchased.

With at least 10 credits purchased, the daily cap rises to 1,000 requests. Janitor’s OpenRouter error guide adds that even error messages count toward the daily cap, so a broken setup burns the allowance.

Router reaches third-party models without a key. It is limited to janitor+ subscribers on the web, with mobile support planned. Usage is billed per token at each model’s listed rate, with no separate Router fee and 10% off some popular models for subscribers.

The Router help article lists no per-model rates. It says pricing and context limits appear beside each model in your settings, and per-token cost is shown before you start a chat. Subscribers can claim $5 in launch credits, which expire one year after they are claimed.

Bought credits are a final sale under the Terms, can expire 365 days after purchase, and are cancelled without refund if you delete your account.

My read: start on JLLM. A proxy suits a reader who already pays a model provider; Router suits a janitor+ subscriber who wants other models without managing keys. Whichever model runs the chat, Janitor’s content rules still apply.

Content Rules and Moderation

Janitor allows adult fiction on adult accounts, but every bot carries a content tag, and some content is banned under any tag. Bots with romantic or sexual themes must be tagged Limitless; Limited bots are for general audiences (Limited and Limitless FAQ).

A Limitless tag never makes prohibited content acceptable. The Terms ban, among other things:

  • any sexualization or depiction of minors
  • human trafficking, gore, bestiality and sexual violence
  • illegal activity, terrorism and violent extremism
  • self-harm encouragement, hate speech, harassment and doxxing
  • intellectual property infringement, spam and attempts to get around moderation

The minors rule is the strictest. Every character and persona must be defined as an adult in the personality or scenario field, and an underage persona means permanent account termination (minor content policy).

Avatar images may not show explicit nudity or overtly sexual imagery. To report a bot, use the Report button next to Block on its page, or email support@janitorai.com.

Paying changes none of this: a subscription or Router credits do not limit moderation, and a moderated account gets no refund. The strictest rule is about age, which decides who may use the platform at all.

Age Limits and Age Verification

You must be 18 or older: the Terms prohibit anyone under 18 from using the platform or creating an account. Users on IP addresses in Australia and Brazil must complete a one-time age check from April 24, 2026, and UK users from June 15, 2026 (age verification article).

The check runs through k-ID, with facial age estimation, an ID scan or AgeKey. Janitor receives only a yes or no answer on whether you are over 18.

Outside those three countries nothing changes, and Janitor has no plans to extend verification. Misrepresenting your age is still a material breach of the Terms, and users reasonably suspected to be under 18 are permanently banned. Verification shares little, but your account and chats are another matter.

Privacy and Your Data

Janitor collects your account details, the characters and chat conversations you create, transaction records, your IP address, device data and an approximate location derived from your IP. That list comes from its Privacy Policy, last updated September 17, 2026. JanitorAI processes and stores data in the United States and other countries.

Among its uses of data, the policy lists research and development “to improve our AI systems”. I would treat anything typed into a chat as data the company holds, and keep real names and work details out of it.

Janitor does not sell personal data as defined under the CCPA/CPRA, and it does not respond to Do Not Track signals. Signing in with Google shares your Google account ID, email, name and profile picture, but not your Gmail, Drive files, contacts or calendars.

To delete your account (account deletion steps):

  • Go to Settings, open the Security tab and click Delete account.
  • Enter the 6-digit code sent to your account email.
  • The account is deactivated first and can be restored during the grace period; then deletion is permanent.

Support cannot delete an account for you, so losing access to the account email blocks deletion. Some records, including your email address, can stay in deleted-account records for purchase recovery, security and legal reasons.

Limits and Fixes When Janitor AI Is Not Working

Five common causes, each with a check you can run yourself:

ProblemLikely causeWhat to check
The bot forgets earlier eventsThe context window is fullTrim the bot setup; write a Chat Memory summary
“Your account needs to be at least 30 days old”The creator set an account-age gateWait until the account is 30 days old
The app hides bots or imagesApp Safe Mode is on by defaultWebsite: Settings, Privacy & Display
A proxy error reads “free-models-per-day” (429)OpenRouter’s daily cap on free modelsWait for the reset, or buy credits
Nothing loadsA site outageThe status page, status.janitorai.com

Sources: account-age error, app moderation FAQ and status page FAQ, checked October 2026.

For proxy trouble, the error guide’s routine comes first: check that the config is Active, click Save Settings, refresh the page, then click Test.

The help center has an AI assistant and human agents; billing questions go to billing@janitorai.com. These limits matter for personal use; for work, the first question is whether the Terms allow it at all.

Can You Use Janitor AI for Business? When an Alternative Fits Better

No, not without permission: the Terms grant a license for personal, non-commercial purposes and bar commercial use without Janitor’s prior written consent (Terms updated October 8, 2026).

A branded support character is out unless Janitor agrees in writing. Disputes also go to binding AAA arbitration with a class action waiver, which a legal team will want to know first.

For a work assistant, my ranking of the best AI chatbots for work compares the options by job and budget.

If the goal is software that completes tasks for you, the list of AI agents that automate business tasks is the closer match.

A team that has already picked Claude can follow my guide on how to set up Claude for work.

Marketers with no budget should look at the free AI content generators.

Janitor does fit one reader well: an adult who wants interactive character fiction for personal use, starts free on JLLM and pays only when longer memory matters.

FAQ

Is there a Janitor AI APK?

Only the iOS and Android apps in the official stores are official, per Janitor’s app FAQ. The Terms call a modified app a material violation that can end in account deletion, so an APK from another site puts the account at risk.

Does Janitor have a Reddit or Discord community?

Yes. The help center asks users to flag errors on its Reddit or Discord, and the app FAQ sends bug reports to a channel on its Discord server.

Is Janitor AI safe to use?

It is an adults-only service with published content rules, report tools and a privacy policy that says it does not sell personal data. The risks to weigh are what you type, since chat conversations are among the data it collects, and billing that is generally non-refundable.
