Microsoft Copilot is free with a signed-in Microsoft account, and paid Copilot starts at $9.99 a month, billed monthly, on Microsoft 365 Personal. Businesses pay $21 per user per month, paid yearly, for the Copilot Business add-on, and enterprises pay $30 per user per month on top of a qualifying Microsoft 365 plan.

That spread is why Microsoft Copilot pricing confuses buyers: Microsoft sells the same assistant on three separate price sheets. This guide puts them on one page, with the cost for any team size and the plan each buyer should pick.

Quick pricing answer

  • Free: the Microsoft Copilot app with a signed-in Microsoft account (limited usage); Copilot Chat at work with an eligible Microsoft 365 plan.
  • Individuals: Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 a month, billed monthly; Premium at $19.99 a month for heavy AI use. Both have a 1-month free trial.
  • Small businesses: the Copilot Business add-on at $21 per user per month, paid yearly ($18 in the first year on annual purchases through December 31, 2026). Business Standard with Copilot costs $23.50 per user per month, paid yearly.
  • Enterprises: the Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on at $30 per user per month, paid yearly, or E7 at $99 per user per month, paid yearly.
  • Caveat: add-ons need a Microsoft 365 license underneath, and Family’s Copilot works for the owner only. Prices in USD for US buyers, checked October 2026.

Prices were checked in October 2026 on Microsoft’s United States pages, in USD. Consumer plans are priced per subscription, business and enterprise plans per user per month, and Premium pricing varies by country, region, retailer and promotional offers.

Both business bundles also come without Teams: Business Standard with Copilot at $20.30 and Business Premium with Copilot at $28.80 per user per month, paid yearly, or $24.36 and $34.56 on a monthly subscription.

Microsoft Copilot Pricing Plans Explained

The plans form two separate ladders. Consumer plans (Personal, Family, Premium, Pro) buy more Copilot usage and storage for one AI user, while work plans (Copilot Chat, then a Copilot license, then E7) buy Copilot inside your organization’s data, apps and agents, per user.

Microsoft Copilot (free) and Copilot Chat at work

Copilot costs $0 in two places. At home, the Copilot app is free with a signed-in Microsoft account, with “Limited usage with a free Microsoft account” and no published number for that limit.

At work, Copilot Chat is a web-grounded assistant included at no additional cost with eligible Microsoft 365 plans. The catch: Copilot Chat uses public web data and “doesn’t integrate with Microsoft 365 apps or organizational content such as files, emails, or chats.”

That gap is the upgrade trigger: AI chat grounded in your work data, such as your team’s files, emails and chats, takes a paid Copilot license. For free assistants, browse my best free AI tools.

Microsoft 365 Personal

Microsoft 365 Personal costs $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year for one person: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook desktop apps with Copilot built in, Copilot chat “with higher usage than free” and 1 TB of storage.

For a freelancer who already pays for Office, Personal bundles Copilot with the Office apps in one subscription. Copilot in Excel needs AutoSave on, so the file must live in OneDrive. If you only need help with grammar and tone, see my Grammarly pricing guide.

Move up to Premium when you hit usage limits or need Researcher and Analyst, which Microsoft reserves for Premium and Pro.

Microsoft 365 Family

Family does not give every member Copilot. At $12.99 per month or $129.99 per year it covers 1 to 6 people and 2 TB of shared storage, but its AI features are “for subscription owner only”.

The $12.99 – $9.99 = $3 a month over Personal, billed monthly, buys apps and storage for five other people, not more Copilot. Two people who both want Copilot need two subscriptions.

Microsoft 365 Premium

Microsoft 365 Premium, at $19.99 per month or $199.99 per year, is the plan for daily, heavy AI use. Over Family it adds Copilot chat “with extensive usage”, features “currently exclusive to Premium & Pro” such as Researcher, Analyst and Cowork, and limited usage for agentic AI. AI stays with the subscription owner.

At $19.99 – $12.99 = $7 a month more than Family, Premium makes sense when Copilot is your main writing and research tool. If you are weighing it against a standalone chatbot, my comparison of ChatGPT Go vs Plus covers that side of the choice.

Microsoft 365 Pro

Microsoft 365 Pro costs $99.99 per month, with monthly billing only. Over Premium it adds the highest Copilot chat and agentic AI usage and 5 TB of shared storage.

A year of Pro is $99.99 x 12 = $1,199.88 against Premium’s $199.99 yearly price. Pro only pays off for one person who keeps running into Premium’s caps, because its AI still serves the subscription owner alone.

Microsoft 365 Copilot Business (add-on)

The Copilot Business add-on costs $21 per user per month, paid yearly, or $25.20 on a monthly subscription, for up to 300 users with an eligible business plan. Its first-year promotional price is under billing and discounts below.

Over free Copilot Chat it adds Edit with Copilot in Word, Excel and PowerPoint, AI chat grounded in your work data, Work IQ, and pre-built agents such as Researcher, Analyst and Facilitator.

Microsoft sells the add-on only to existing Microsoft 365 customers with an eligible Business plan, so a business new to Microsoft 365 buys a bundle instead. On Business Basic, the bundle below costs less, as the cost section shows.

On Business Standard or Business Premium, add the $21 to the per-user price you pay today and set that sum against the matching bundle: $23.50 for Business Standard with Copilot or $32 for Business Premium with Copilot, paid yearly. Pick the add-on only when your sum comes in lower.

Microsoft 365 Business Standard with Copilot

At $23.50 per user per month paid yearly, or $28.20 on a monthly subscription, this bundle is the default start for a business new to Microsoft 365. One license holds desktop, web and mobile Office apps, custom business email, Teams and Copilot, for up to 300 users.

The version without Teams saves $23.50 – $20.30 = $3.20 per user per month, paid yearly. My Microsoft Teams review helps decide whether Teams earns that difference.

A team that already lives in Slack can weigh the no-Teams version with my Slack vs Microsoft Teams comparison.

Microsoft 365 Business Premium with Copilot

Business Premium with Copilot costs $32 – $23.50 = $8.50 per user per month more than Business Standard with Copilot, paid yearly, and that money buys security, not more AI.

The extra covers policy-based identity and access management, device security and management, email and threat protection against phishing and malware, and discovery and protection of sensitive data. Business Premium also includes Microsoft Defender for Business.

Choose it when you manage company laptops or handle client data under compliance rules. A team without those needs gets the same Copilot features on Business Standard with Copilot.

Microsoft 365 Copilot (add-on)

Above 300 users, Copilot costs $30 per user per month, paid yearly, or $31.50 paid monthly on an annual commitment. A separate license for a qualifying Microsoft 365 plan is required underneath it.

Over Copilot Chat it adds AI search across work data with 100+ connectors, Copilot Notebooks, agents grounded in your work data, and Copilot Analytics. The $30 is only the Copilot layer; the base license comes on top, as the cost section shows.

Microsoft 365 E7 (Frontier Suite)

Microsoft 365 E7 costs $99 per user per month, paid yearly, and it is a suite, not a Copilot upgrade. It includes Microsoft 365 E5, Copilot, Agent 365 and Microsoft Entra Suite on an annual commitment, with no monthly price shown.

It pays off only for an organization that would buy E5, Copilot and Agent 365 anyway; for anyone else it is a bundle discount on products they do not need.

Does Microsoft Copilot Have a Free Plan or Trial?

Yes to both. The Copilot app is free with a Microsoft account at limited usage, Copilot Chat is included with eligible work plans, and Personal, Family and Premium each offer a free month.

Business plans have a one-month free trial that needs a credit card and converts to paid unless you cancel in time. Microsoft 365 Pro lists no trial, only a Buy now button.

Paying buys what free lacks: Copilot inside the desktop Office apps and higher usage for consumers, and Copilot on files, email and chats for work users.

Microsoft does not publish usage numbers behind its “higher than free”, “extensive” and “highest” labels. The Premium trial settles it: use Copilot as you normally would for a month and see whether you hit a cap.

Monthly vs Annual Microsoft Copilot Pricing

Yearly billing saves $19.89 on Personal, $25.89 on Family and $39.89 on Premium against 12 monthly payments. On Copilot Business it saves $25.20 – $21 = $4.20 per user per month, while the enterprise add-on is an annual commitment either way.

Sources: Microsoft 365 plan comparison, Copilot for business, Copilot for enterprise, checked Oct 2026.

For an individual, monthly billing is the right call during the first months, because the yearly saving tops out at $39.89 on Premium. For a 25-person team on Business Premium with Copilot, the gap is $6.40 x 25 x 12 = $1,920 a year, which is worth committing to once the team uses Copilot.

Microsoft’s business terms offer three commitments: monthly with monthly payment, annual with monthly payment, and annual paid upfront. Only the first can be canceled at any time without a penalty.

Additional Microsoft Copilot Costs to Consider

Three things can push the bill above the Copilot price: the Microsoft 365 license an add-on requires, usage-based Copilot Credits, and separate products such as Agent 365 and standalone Copilot Studio.

Cost typeWhen it appliesPricing basisNotes
Base Microsoft 365 licenseUnder the Copilot Business or Microsoft 365 Copilot add-onBusiness Basic $7, E3 $39, E5 $60 per user per month, paid yearlyBundles and E7 include it

Copilot Credits are the cost to watch. Microsoft says everyday chat and Copilot in the apps stay included, while advanced experiences are billed by usage. The pages I read publish no rate per credit, so set a spending policy in the admin center before you switch on Cowork or Autopilot for a whole team.

Custom agents in free Copilot Chat are metered too, so a team that builds agents without Copilot licenses also pays by usage.

How Much Does Microsoft Copilot Cost for Your Team?

At list prices, Copilot costs from $99.99 a year for one person on Personal billed yearly to $180,000 a year for 500 users adding Microsoft 365 Copilot to E3, before the E3 license itself.

Microsoft Copilot cost calculator

This calculator needs JavaScript. The scenario table below gives the same estimate for typical workloads.

The calculator takes the number of Copilot users, monthly or annual billing, and what you need: Copilot on work data, Office apps in the price, Teams, advanced security or heavy AI usage. It shows every plan side by side with its monthly and 12-month cost and names the cheapest plan that covers the need.

It leaves out tax, regional prices, Copilot Credits and the base license under an add-on. The free app and Copilot Chat have no price to compute, and consumer plans show monthly billing; their yearly prices are in the billing table above.

These totals are estimates from list prices, not a quote. They exclude tax, Copilot Credits, Agent 365 and any Enterprise Agreement discount.

Pricing note

Add-on prices exclude the Microsoft 365 license they require, and usage-based Copilot Credits can be billed on top of the business Copilot plans when advanced experiences such as Cowork or Autopilot are used.

Bundle or add-on: the math Microsoft does not print

A business on Business Basic pays more for the add-on route than for the bundle. Basic plus the add-on costs $7 + $21 = $28 per user per month, paid yearly, against $23.50 for Business Standard with Copilot, which also brings the desktop apps Basic lacks.

The gap is $7 + $21 – $23.50 = $4.50 per user per month, which for 10 users comes to $4.50 x 10 x 12 = $540 a year. Even in the promotional first year, $7 + $18 = $25 still costs more than the bundle, and the $18 price applies to the first year only.

In enterprise, E5 plus Copilot plus Agent 365 costs $60 + $30 + $15 = $105 per user per month, paid yearly, against $99 for E7. For 500 users that gap is $105 – $99 = $6, or $6 x 500 x 12 = $36,000 a year, and E7 adds Microsoft Entra Suite.

An E3 organization that only wants Copilot pays $39 + $30 = $69 per user per month, paid yearly. That is $99 – $69 = $30 less per user than E7, so E7 is the wrong move unless E5 security and Agent 365 are already on the roadmap.

Which Microsoft Copilot Plan Should You Choose?

Occasional users should stay free, one Office user should take Personal, heavy AI users Premium, small businesses Copilot Business or a Copilot bundle, and organizations over 300 users Microsoft 365 Copilot or E7.

The 300-user line decides the business path. Microsoft enforces a tenant limit of 300 provisioned licenses across the family of business plans, so a company at 250 Business Premium seats can add only 50 more of any business plan.

Is Microsoft Copilot Worth the Price?

Paid Copilot is worth it when your work happens in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams. Free Copilot Chat cannot work with your organization’s files, emails and chats, and cannot edit inside Word, Excel and PowerPoint. It is not worth it when free usage covers your chat, or when your team works mostly outside Microsoft 365.

For an individual who already needs Office apps, Personal is easy to justify, because it is an Office subscription that happens to include Copilot. Premium is harder: pay for it only when you use Researcher or Analyst every week, or when Personal’s usage stops you mid-task. If search is your main use, see my Perplexity vs ChatGPT comparison.

For a business, the add-on is the price of Copilot reaching email, files and meetings. A team that only asks Copilot web questions already has that in Copilot Chat. If you are weighing other assistants, compare my ChatGPT vs Gemini breakdown.

Who should skip each tier: every paid plan has one buyer it fails.

  • Skip Personal if you only chat with Copilot and never open the Office apps; the free app covers chat at limited usage.
  • Skip Family if you expected Copilot for the whole household; only the owner gets it.
  • Skip Premium if Personal’s usage covers you and you have no weekly need for Researcher or Analyst.
  • Skip Pro unless Premium’s limits stop you repeatedly; it costs five times Premium’s monthly price.
  • Skip the add-on on Business Basic; Business Standard with Copilot costs less per user.
  • Skip Business Standard with Copilot if you manage company devices or handle sensitive data; Business Premium with Copilot adds device management and threat protection.
  • Skip Business Premium with Copilot if you have neither need; Business Standard with Copilot carries the same Copilot features.
  • Skip the Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on if your budget covers only its $30; the qualifying Microsoft 365 license comes on top.
  • Skip E7 unless you also need E5 and Agent 365.

Teams that run on Google Workspace rather than Microsoft 365 should compare Gemini pricing and plan limits before buying Copilot.

If Microsoft 365 is not your home base at all, my list of the best AI chatbots by job and budget covers the standalone options.

Billing, Discounts and Cancellation

A promotional price on the business plans is the Copilot Business add-on at $18 instead of $21 per user per month, for the first year, on annual purchases made between July 1 and December 31, 2026. It needs an existing eligible Business plan, excludes trials and cannot be combined with other offers.

Large buyers get Enterprise Agreement discounts, “typically 250+ licenses”, and Microsoft does not publish their size. Eligible college students may qualify for discounted Microsoft 365 subscriptions, and Microsoft’s Workplace Discount Program offers savings through eligible employers; neither page gives an amount.

Business and enterprise subscriptions have a 7-day cancellation window for a prorated refund once the paid subscription begins. After that, an annual commitment paid monthly may carry an early-cancellation penalty, and one paid upfront gets no refund before the contract ends.

Consumer plans renew automatically until you cancel in your Microsoft account.

How I Verified Microsoft Copilot Pricing

I checked every price in October 2026 (October 27 and 28) on Microsoft’s own pages for the United States, in USD.

The pages: the Copilot plans for individuals, the Microsoft 365 plan comparison, the Microsoft Store page for Premium, Copilot for business, the business plans comparison, Copilot for enterprise, the enterprise plans page, the Microsoft 365 Copilot service description and copilot.microsoft.com.

Published prices appear exactly as Microsoft prints them, with the billing basis each page states. Totals are my calculations at list price: price x users x 12 months for annual totals, with the bundle comparisons adding the published base-license prices. The plan picks and the worth-it verdicts are my editorial judgment from those figures.

Microsoft does not publish a rate per Copilot Credit on these pages, the size of Enterprise Agreement discounts, a monthly price for E7, a price for Microsoft Entra Suite, or numbers behind its “higher”, “extensive” and “highest” usage labels.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Microsoft charging me $9.99 for?

A $9.99 monthly charge from Microsoft is usually Microsoft 365 Personal, the one-person plan with Copilot in the Office apps. You can see and manage it in your Microsoft account under Services & Subscriptions, where Microsoft lets you renew, switch plans or update billing.

What happened to Copilot Pro?

Copilot Pro is not in Microsoft’s US lineup for individuals, which lists Personal, Family, Premium and Pro. When I checked in October 2026, the Microsoft Store’s Copilot Pro address opened the page to buy Microsoft 365 Premium, the plan with extensive Copilot usage and features exclusive to Premium and Pro.

Can my family members use Copilot on my Family plan?

No. AI features on Family, Premium and Pro are only available to the subscription owner and cannot be shared. Family members still get the apps and the shared storage, each on up to 5 devices at once.

Do I need a Microsoft 365 license to buy Microsoft 365 Copilot?

Yes. Microsoft 365 Copilot is an add-on plan with specific licensing prerequisites, so it sits on a qualifying Microsoft 365 license. Existing enterprise customers ask their Microsoft representative to add it to their Microsoft 365 for enterprise subscription.

Is Copilot Chat really free for businesses?

Yes, for users with an eligible Microsoft 365 work plan, at no additional cost. For eligible business users signed in with a Microsoft Entra ID, Copilot Chat also comes with enterprise data protection, though it stays limited to web data rather than your organization’s files.

Final Pricing Verdict

Start free, and pay only when you need Copilot inside your own files. One person who uses Office should take Microsoft 365 Personal; move to Premium only for daily Researcher and Analyst work.

Small businesses already on Business Standard or Premium should add Copilot Business’s $21 to what they pay per user today and buy the lower of that sum and the matching Copilot bundle, paid yearly. Take the first-year promotion only for a team that will use Copilot every week.

A business starting fresh, or one on Business Basic, should buy Business Standard with Copilot instead.

Above 300 users, add Microsoft 365 Copilot to E3 or E5, and move to E7 only when E5 and Agent 365 are on the plan too.

If you lean away from Microsoft, my Google Gemini review is the full assessment of the main alternative.
