Pick Perplexity for research you need to cite, and ChatGPT for an all-round assistant that writes, reads files, makes images and runs agents. That is the Perplexity vs ChatGPT answer for most buyers.

Perplexity Pro costs $17 a month billed annually and cites sources in every answer. ChatGPT starts at $8 a month for Go or $20 for Plus, both billed monthly. For one person, that is $17 x 12 = $204 a year against $20 x 12 = $240 for Plus; teams flip the math.

Quick verdict

The deciding difference: Perplexity cites sources by default, while ChatGPT is a general assistant that cites when it searches the web or runs deep research.

Perplexity fits a researcher, analyst or consultant who must show sources and wants models from several labs. ChatGPT fits everyday writing, file analysis and image work, and it sells the cheaper team seat.

The trade-off: a Perplexity Enterprise Pro seat costs $400 a year, against $20 x 12 = $240 for a ChatGPT Business Standard seat billed annually. ChatGPT’s personal plans bill monthly only.

Choose Perplexity if

  • You need checkable sources on routine questions, not only on long reports
  • You want OpenAI, Google and Anthropic models behind one search box

Choose ChatGPT if

  • You want to make images and analyze spreadsheets before paying anything
  • Your team of two or more wants the lower seat price

Four of those differences change what your working day looks like.

Key Differences Between Perplexity and ChatGPT

Four differences decide most choices: citations by default, a menu of labs’ models, creation on the cheap tiers, and the billing basis.

  • Citations by default: Perplexity cites every answer, Free included; ChatGPT cites when a response uses web search. A consultant who must show sources gets them on Perplexity without asking.
  • Models from several labs: Perplexity Pro lets you pick among 7 models from OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, xAI and three other providers. ChatGPT’s help pages describe OpenAI models, such as GPT-5.6 Luna on Free.
  • Creation on cheap tiers: ChatGPT Free creates images and analyzes data, and Go raises those limits for $8 a month. Perplexity Free has no image generation.
  • Billing basis: Perplexity Pro and Max are priced for annual billing; ChatGPT Go, Plus and Pro bill monthly only. Perplexity’s headline price is the annual-billing price, while ChatGPT Go bills monthly and can be canceled anytime.

The citation difference is why Perplexity makes the shortlist, and my Perplexity review judges the rest of the product.

The creation difference is ChatGPT’s case, and my full ChatGPT review judges whether it holds up beyond this pair.

Perplexity vs ChatGPT: Features Compared

Citations and creation breadth decide most choices; the matrix shows the plan where each feature starts.

Each subheading below compares both tools on one criterion and names the reader each fits.

Perplexity gives you checkable sources by default; ChatGPT gives them when a response searches the web or runs deep research.

Perplexity cites every answer, Free included, and Perplexity Pro adds 10x as many citations per answer. Pro and Max also add premium data sources such as PitchBook, Statista and S&P Capital IQ. For a market analyst, that puts paid data behind the citations.

ChatGPT may search the web on its own when a question needs current information, and those responses “may include citations”. Every deep research report includes citations or source links. So ChatGPT cites reliably when you ask for a report, and less predictably in quick chats.

Research volume is harder to compare. Perplexity counts Research queries for Free (1 a month) and Enterprise (50 and 500 a month), but Pro and Max get “monthly limits”. OpenAI’s deep research allowance varies by plan, with the remaining count shown in the product.

Verdict: cited research

Perplexity fits a reader who must show sources on everyday questions, on any plan including Free. ChatGPT closes the gap only when you run deep research. Caveat: ChatGPT search citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect, so open each cited source before you quote it, on either tool.

Answer quality depends on your own questions. Run three of them through both free plans and open every cited source before you pay.

Model choice

Perplexity lets paid users pick a model from seven providers; ChatGPT’s plans move you up OpenAI’s own models.

Perplexity Pro’s model list holds GPT-6.1 Sol, Gemini 3.8 Flash, Claude Sonnet 5.5, Kimi K3, GLM 5.3, Grok 4.7 and Nemotron 3.5 Super VL. Max adds GPT-6 Astra, Gemini 4 Argon, Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Fable 5.1, in a snapshot dated October 17, 2026.

Free users get the automatic “Best” option and cannot choose an advanced model.

Free users have GPT-5.6 Luna; Go’s Think option runs on it, and Go does not include GPT-5.6 Sol. Plus adds “broader model options than on the Free plan”. The Ultrafast versions of GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol sit on Pro 500 only.

For $17 a month billed annually, Perplexity Pro puts GPT-6.1 Sol, Gemini 3.8 Flash and Claude Sonnet 5.5 behind one search box. ChatGPT’s higher tiers buy more usage instead.

Verdict: model choice

Perplexity fits a reader who wants to check a GPT answer against Claude or Gemini without three subscriptions. Caveat: models are subject to change, and Perplexity’s model selector is the source of truth for your account.

If Gemini is your other option, read my ChatGPT vs Gemini comparison.

Agentic AI and creation tools

ChatGPT creates more on its free and low tiers and puts ChatGPT Agent and Codex in every Business Standard seat; Perplexity runs long agent tasks through Computer, paid in credits.

ChatGPT Free creates images, analyzes data and reads uploaded files, each on its own usage limit. Go raises those limits and adds projects, tasks and existing custom GPTs. A Business Standard seat adds ChatGPT Agent, Deep Research, Company Knowledge and Codex.

If ChatGPT wins this row for you, my ChatGPT prompts for business work give those creation tools a starting brief.

Perplexity Free has no image generation, while Pro adds image and video generation. Computer is Perplexity’s autonomous agent: it researches, codes, creates documents and uses connected tools, paid in credits.

Perplexity prices 100 credits at $1, so a typical multi-step research report costs 350 / 100 = $3.50 to 950 / 100 = $9.50. Pro includes weekly Computer usage before credits apply; Max includes 10,000 credits a month.

Pro’s 4,000 and Max’s 35,000 bonus credits are one-time and expire in about 30 days. They suit a trial project, not a monthly budget.

For coding, Codex sits in ChatGPT Pro and in Business Standard seats, while Perplexity’s Computer codes on credits.

Verdict: agents and creation

Depends on use: ChatGPT fits a person who wants images, spreadsheets and drafts from one free or $8 plan, and a team that wants Codex in each seat. Perplexity fits a researcher who hands off long multi-step reports and accepts paying per task. Caveat: Perplexity calls its credit ranges examples, not guarantees.

Privacy, training and admin controls

Neither vendor trains on team-plan data, and both let Free and Pro users opt out; the differences sit in compliance and data export.

Perplexity Free, Pro and Max users can opt out of AI training in Account Settings. ChatGPT Free, Plus and Pro share data for training by default until you turn off “Improve the model for everyone”.

Perplexity Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max data is never used for model training. OpenAI won’t train on a Business workspace’s data, and Enterprise opts out by default.

Compliance is where the team plans part ways. Perplexity Enterprise Pro lists SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, GDPR and PCI DSS compliance plus SSO, and Enterprise Max adds SCIM and audit logs. OpenAI sends teams that need BAAs or Zero Data Retention to a contracted offering instead of self-serve Business.

Both vendors document data export, and the difference sits in team workspaces. On ChatGPT, Free, Go, Plus and Pro users can export their own history, but self-service export is not available in Business or Enterprise workspaces. Export a personal workspace before you merge it.

On Perplexity, the GDPR help page makes access self-serve: sign in, open account details and click Export my data for an emailed download link. That page names no plan, so confirm the button in an Enterprise workspace before a migration depends on it.

ChatGPT Business gives admins controls for users, roles and access, plus spend controls; SSO, SCIM and domain verification come with ChatGPT Enterprise.

Verdict: privacy and compliance

Comparable on training: individuals on Perplexity Free, Pro and Max and on ChatGPT Free, Plus and Pro can opt out, and both keep team data out of training.

On compliance, Perplexity Enterprise Pro lists HIPAA on its pricing card, while a ChatGPT team that needs a BAA moves to a contracted offering. Have your compliance lead read the agreements either way.

Those controls come at a price, and the gap between the two team plans is wide.

Perplexity vs ChatGPT Pricing

One person pays less on Perplexity Pro than on ChatGPT Plus by paying a year upfront: $17 x 12 = $204 against $20 x 12 = $240. A team pays less on ChatGPT Business at every seat count I priced.

The billing bases run in opposite directions. Perplexity’s pricing page prints Pro and Max prices “when billed annually” and has no monthly toggle. ChatGPT Go, Plus and Pro bill monthly, with no annual billing, while both team plans bill either way.

One display detail matters for budgets. Perplexity’s pricing page shows Enterprise Pro at $34 a month per seat when billed annually, while the billing FAQ bills $400 a seat per year: $400 / 12 = $33.33 a month. I use the billed amounts in every total below.

For Education Pro and the credit rules, see the full breakdown of Perplexity’s plans.

For Pro tiers and seat types in more depth, ChatGPT’s plan-by-plan pricing goes further than this pair needs.

One person: Perplexity Pro vs ChatGPT Plus (and Go)

Paid upfront, Perplexity Pro’s year costs $20 x 12 – $17 x 12 = $36 less than twelve months of ChatGPT Plus. That $36 buys ChatGPT Plus the right to cancel after any month, which is worth more if you are not sure the tool will stick.

ChatGPT Go costs $8 x 12 = $96 a year, and Perplexity has no plan between Free and Pro to match it. Go fits a budget user who wants more images and file uploads but can live without GPT-5.6 Sol.

Perplexity Free stops at 3 Pro Searches a day and 1 Research query a month. Hitting those caps most days is the signal that Pro pays.

ChatGPT Free keeps everyday text chats unlimited but caps files, images and data analysis separately. Plus adds voice conversations, file analysis and deep research tools where available, so the trigger is a tool limit you keep reaching.

Power users: Perplexity Max vs ChatGPT Pro tiers

Perplexity Max costs $167 x 12 = $2,004 a year. ChatGPT Pro costs $100 x 12 = $1,200 on Pro 100, $200 x 12 = $2,400 on Pro 200 and $500 x 12 = $6,000 on Pro 500.

Max adds 4 more models, the highest usage limits and 10,000 Computer credits a month. At 100 credits per $1, those credits are worth 10,000 / 100 = $100 a month, so Max costs $167 – $100 = $67 a month more than its credits.

ChatGPT’s tiers scale usage: Pro 200 includes more than Pro 100, and Pro 500 has the most usage and the only Ultrafast mode. OpenAI publishes no allowance numbers for the three tiers.

The October 2026 change hits Pro 200 buyers. New Pro 200 subscriptions carry a lower usage allowance at the same $200 a month, and grandfathered subscribers keep the previous allowance through October 29, 2026.

My read: Pro 100 is the cheaper top tier. Max earns its higher price only for a researcher who would otherwise buy Computer credits and wants the extra models.

What a team pays: Enterprise Pro vs ChatGPT Business

A five-person team pays $20 x 5 x 12 = $1,200 a year on ChatGPT Business Standard billed annually, against $400 x 5 = $2,000 on Perplexity Enterprise Pro.

A team cannot pool Perplexity’s personal plan instead: Perplexity sells Pro and Max “for personal use only”. ChatGPT Business needs at least 2 seats, which only blocks a team of one.

ScenarioPerplexity EnterpriseChatGPT Business

Yearly team cost by seat count and billing, US list prices checked October 2026

Sources: Perplexity Enterprise billing FAQ, ChatGPT Business, checked October 2026.

Assumptions: US list prices, no tax, no extra credits or add-ons, and no volume discount. Perplexity names possible discounts for teams of 250+ members, schools, non-profits and government agencies.

The high-usage rows price one seat inside a team workspace. A ChatGPT Business workspace needs at least 2 seats, so a solo buyer should compare Pro 100 at $100 x 12 = $1,200 a year in the Power users section above.

Per seat on annual billing, Perplexity costs $400 a year against $20 x 12 = $240, a gap of $160. That extra buys 500 monthly Computer credits per seat, 50 Research queries a month, seven providers’ models and a compliance list that names HIPAA.

A five-person sales or ops team that needs none of those should take ChatGPT Business. A team that needs more usage can take Premium seats, which give 5x Standard’s usage with no 5-hour usage limit, while Enterprise Max adds 15,000 monthly Computer credits per seat.

One billing rule catches Perplexity admins: removing a member frees the seat but does not lower the bill until the seat count changes at the next billing period. ChatGPT Enterprise has no published price; OpenAI sells it through its sales contact form.

If your company already works in Microsoft apps, see my Microsoft Copilot pricing guide.

Each of these bills buys a different set of strengths and limits, which the pros and cons below set side by side.

Perplexity vs ChatGPT: Pros and Cons

Perplexity’s strengths are sources and model choice, and its costs land on teams; ChatGPT’s strengths are breadth and a cheap seat, and its costs land on billing and data portability.

For Perplexity, the balance is research depth against team cost:

Pros

  • Citations in every answer, Free included, so even a free account shows where claims come from
  • 7 models from 7 providers on Pro, which suits anyone who cross-checks answers
  • Enterprise Pro lists SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, GDPR and PCI DSS on its pricing card
  • Enterprise seats move between team members without buying a new seat

Cons

  • Free has no image generation and stops at 3 Pro Searches a day
  • Personal-use licensing pushes even a two-person team onto Enterprise seats
  • Pro and Max prices are shown for annual billing only
  • The Enterprise Pro seat costs more than a ChatGPT Business Standard seat at either billing basis

For ChatGPT, the balance is breadth and price against portability:

Pros

  • Go at $8 a month is a paid step Perplexity does not have below Pro
  • Free creates images and analyzes data and files, each on its own limit
  • A Business Standard seat costs $20 per user per month, billed annually
  • Codex and ChatGPT Agent come in every Business Standard seat

Cons

  • Monthly-only billing on Plus makes twelve months cost $20 x 12 – $17 x 12 = $36 more than Perplexity Pro’s annual price
  • Ads may appear on Free in certain countries, and OpenAI may test ads on Go
  • No self-service data export in Business or Enterprise workspaces
  • BAAs and Zero Data Retention need a contracted offering, not self-serve Business

Which Is Better for Your Needs?

Skip Perplexity if: one person needs images, spreadsheets and drafts from one plan, or a small team watches the seat price. ChatGPT covers both for less.

Skip ChatGPT Business if: your team needs HIPAA listed on the plan page, or must cite sources on every answer. Perplexity Enterprise Pro lists HIPAA on its card and cites every answer.

If you are weighing Gemini or Grok as well, start from the wider AI chatbot shortlist.

How I Compared Perplexity and ChatGPT

I compared the two from each vendor’s own plan, help and billing pages, read in October 2026. That meant Perplexity’s pricing pages and help center, and OpenAI’s Help Center plus the ChatGPT Go launch post.

I matched plans by the job they do: Free, the first paid tier, the top individual tier, the standard team seat and the high-usage seat. I calculated every yearly total as price x seats x months from the billed amounts, at US list prices.

The criteria were citations, research volume, model choice, creation and agents, privacy and admin controls, and price.

Some figures the vendors do not publish. OpenAI gives no deep research count per plan, no usage numbers for Plus or the Pro tiers, and no Enterprise price, and Perplexity prints no monthly-billing price for Pro or Max. Perplexity’s export instructions name no plan, so its help pages leave open whether Enterprise workspaces keep self-serve export.

FAQ

Does Perplexity use ChatGPT?

Partly: Perplexity says it orchestrates several models and picks one per query, including ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude and NVIDIA Nemotron. On Perplexity Pro you can also pick GPT-6.1 Sol from the model list yourself. The answer still arrives in Perplexity’s interface, with Perplexity’s citations.

Can a team share one Perplexity Pro account?

No. Perplexity sells Pro and Max for personal use only, so a team buys Enterprise Pro or Enterprise Max seats. An admin can move a seat from one member to another without buying a new one, and one organization can mix both seat types.

Do Perplexity or ChatGPT plans include API access?

No on both. Perplexity Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max exclude API usage, and developers buy credits on Perplexity’s pay-as-you-go API Platform. OpenAI bills API usage separately from ChatGPT Go, Plus and Business, so budget the API as its own line.

Final Verdict: Perplexity or ChatGPT?

There is no overall winner: Perplexity is my pick for cited research and model choice, and ChatGPT is my pick for an all-round assistant and the cheaper team seat.

Choose Perplexity if

  • Your work needs sources you can show on every answer
  • You want GPT, Claude and Gemini models in one paid plan
  • You are happy to pay a year upfront for a price lower than ChatGPT Plus
  • Your team wants HIPAA listed on the plan page

Choose ChatGPT if

  • You want images, files and data analysis from Free or Go
  • $8 a month is your ceiling for a paid plan
  • Your team of two or more wants a $20 seat, billed annually
  • You want Codex and ChatGPT Agent in each team seat

The main trade-offs: Perplexity charges more per team seat and needs annual billing for its listed prices. ChatGPT’s answers carry citations when they use web search, and its team workspaces lose self-service export, while Perplexity documents an export button without saying whether Enterprise keeps it.

A person who does both jobs every week can run both: $17 x 12 + $20 x 12 = $444 a year for Perplexity Pro and ChatGPT Plus. If Claude is the third name on your list, see how ChatGPT compares with Claude for business.
