Descript pricing runs $16, $24 or $50 per editor per month on annual billing for Hobbyist, Creator and Business, checked October 2026 in US dollars. Billed monthly, the same three plans cost $24, $35 and $65 per editor per month. Free costs $0, and Enterprise is priced by quote.

The seat price rarely decides the plan. Each editor brings a fixed pool of media minutes and AI credits, Hobbyist cannot buy top ups, and a team past 5 editors needs a quote. Below are the yearly costs for 1, 3 and 5 editors with the math, and the point where a top up beats an upgrade.

Quick pricing answer

Descript has five plans: Free, Hobbyist, Creator, Business and Enterprise.

  • Starting price: Hobbyist at $16 per editor per month billed annually ($16 x 12 = $192 a year), or $24 per editor per month billed monthly.
  • Free plan: $0 with no credit card, 60 media minutes a month and 100 one-time AI credits; no timed trial of the paid plans is listed.
  • Plan for most buyers: Creator at $24 per editor per month billed annually, for a weekly creator or a team of up to 3 editors.
  • Cost caveat: each editor’s media minutes and AI credits force the upgrade, not the seat price, and Hobbyist cannot top up.
  • Checked October 2026 on the US pricing page, in USD. Enterprise is Contact sales.

Descript Pricing at a Glance

Descript lists four plans with public prices plus Enterprise, each priced per person per month in US dollars on the US view of its pricing page, read on October 27, 2026.

Every price above is per person per month on the US view, in US dollars. Annual billing is charged upfront at the start of the yearly cycle, and the pricing page does not state whether prices include tax.

These plans meter media minutes and AI credits. They replaced the transcription-hour Legacy and Sunset plans, which Descript moved over on each subscriber’s next billing date after November 17, 2025.

A page that still quotes transcription hours describes a retired plan. The table shows what a seat costs; what each plan adds, and where it breaks, decides which seat to buy.

Descript Pricing Plans Explained

Each step up buys one decisive thing: Hobbyist is the first plan the page calls watermark-free, at 1080p; Creator adds 4K, top ups and up to 3 editors; and Business adds Brand Studio, dubbing and up to 5 editors.

Free

Free gives one editor 60 media minutes a month, 100 AI credits once, 720p export and 5GB of storage, for $0 and no credit card. That is one hour of uploaded or recorded media: enough to cut one short interview, not a weekly show.

The 100 AI credits never refill, so once they are spent Free has no AI budget left. Upgrade when you need more than an hour of media in a month or any export above 720p.

Hobbyist

Hobbyist covers one solo editor for $16 per month billed annually, or $24 billed monthly, with 10 media hours and 400 AI credits a month. It is the first plan the page calls watermark-free, exporting at 1080p, with 100GB of storage and 5 hours a month of Rooms recording per drive.

Underlord, Studio Sound, Remove Filler Words and AI Speech with custom voice clones are all on the Hobbyist card. Descript’s own plan guide pitches Hobbyist at people who edit one or two compositions a month.

The trap is the ceiling. Top ups are only available on Creator and Business, so a Hobbyist month that needs 12 hours of footage has no bundle to fix it. The cheapest route is Creator: $24 – $16 = $8 more per editor per month on annual billing, or $35 – $24 = $11 more comparing the two monthly prices.

Creator

Creator earns its premium over Hobbyist when you need any of five things: 4K export, more than 10 media hours, unlimited stock media, top ups, or a second or third editor. It costs $24 per editor per month billed annually or $35 billed monthly.

Each editor brings 30 media hours (1,800 minutes) and 800 AI credits a month, and the drive gets 1TB of storage. Creator also unlocks full Underlord access with 20+ more AI tools and 15 hours a month of Rooms recording per drive.

Three editors on annual billing cost $24 x 3 = $72 a month. The upgrade trigger is a fourth editor, since Creator scales to a team of 3, or a need for shared brand controls.

Business

For $50 per editor per month billed annually, or $65 billed monthly, Business gives each editor 40 media hours (2,400 minutes) and 1,500 AI credits a month. Over Creator that is 1,500 – 800 = 700 AI credits more per editor. It scales to 5 editors and doubles storage to 2TB.

The rest of the premium buys team features. Business adds team-wide Brand Studio, translation and dubbing in 30+ languages with proofread, custom avatars from a photo upload or text, and priority support with an SLA.

Business makes sense when a fourth or fifth editor joins, or when localized or on-brand video is the job. A sixth editor means Enterprise, because Business scales to a team of 5.

Enterprise

Enterprise is the plan for more than 5 editors, for SSO, SCIM and audit logs, or for custom contract terms, and its price is Contact sales. Descript publishes no figure or range for it.

The card lists AI credits and media hours sized to the team, AI and data controls, a custom MSA with flexible billing, and a dedicated CSM. Custom invoicing such as ACH transfer also runs through the Enterprise team.

Every plan above is sized by two pools, so how far they stretch decides the plan more often than the feature list.

Media Minutes and AI Credits: What Limits Each Plan

Media minutes count every minute you upload or record, with each still image counted as 1 second, and AI credits count AI tool use.

Both are granted per editor, pooled across the drive and reset when the subscription renews at the start of each billing cycle; unused ones never roll over. The exception is Free’s 100 AI credits, which are one-time.

PlanMedia hours per editorAI credits per editorCost per included hour, annual
Free1 (60 minutes) a month100, one-time$0
Hobbyist10 (600 minutes) a month400 a month$16 / 10 = $1.60
Creator30 (1,800 minutes) a month800 a month$24 / 30 = $0.80
Business40 (2,400 minutes) a month1,500 a month$50 / 40 = $1.25

Creator buys the cheapest included hour of the three paid plans. Every included hour on a paid plan also costs less than the cheapest top-up hour, $3.00 in the 50-hour bundle, so the subscription is always the cheaper way to buy routine footage.

Pooling changes the team math. Each Editor seat adds its minutes and credits to one shared drive pool that any Editor can draw on, so a 3-editor Creator drive holds 90 hours even if one editor uses 50 of them.

Three metering rules matter for budgeting:

  • Rooms bills a recording once, not per guest: a 1-hour session with 5 participants uses 60 media minutes, not 300.
  • Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words cost at most 30 credits per file application, so cleaning a long episode has a ceiling.
  • Underlord, the agentic co-editor, has no fixed price per action, and each chat message uses a few credits.

Hobbyist’s 400 credits cover at least 13 capped Studio Sound runs (13 x 30 = 390), while its 10 hours fill with five 2-hour recordings.

Underlord and generated media do not follow that arithmetic: their credit use depends on the model and the request, and Descript admits this is harder to estimate than a flat rate.

AI speech and voice clones draw on the same credits. If a cloned voice is the main job, dedicated AI voice generators may cover it without a video editor’s seat.

Size the plan by media hours, which are fixed, and settle the credit side on your own footage. Spend the Free plan’s 100 one-time credits on a sample edit, then read what each run cost in the Usage tab before choosing between 800 and 1,500 credits.

Does Descript Have a Free Plan or Trial?

Descript has a free plan, not a timed trial: Free costs $0, needs no credit card, and the pricing page lists no trial of the paid plans.

What stops you on Free is volume and quality: one hour of media a month, a one-time balance of 100 AI credits and 720p export. That is enough to judge transcript editing on real footage.

When you do pay, the safety net is short. Descript refunds a plan purchase only within 48 hours of the invoice date, so test the workflow on Free first. Once you pay, the billing basis changes the yearly bill by up to a third.

Monthly vs Annual Descript Pricing

Annual billing cuts the per-editor price by $24 – $16 = $8 a month on Hobbyist, $35 – $24 = $11 on Creator and $65 – $50 = $15 on Business.

PlanMonthly billingAnnual billingCommitmentSaving per editor per year
Hobbyist$24 per month$16 per month, $16 x 12 = $192 upfront12 months, charged at the start$24 x 12 = $288 minus $16 x 12 = $192, which is $96
Creator$35 per month$24 per month, $24 x 12 = $288 upfront12 months, charged at the start$35 x 12 = $420 minus $24 x 12 = $288, which is $132
Business$65 per month$50 per month, $50 x 12 = $600 upfront12 months, charged at the start$65 x 12 = $780 minus $50 x 12 = $600, which is $180

The page promises savings of up to 35%, but list prices land lower:

  • Hobbyist: $24 – $16 = $8, 33% of the monthly price
  • Creator: $35 – $24 = $11, 31% of the monthly price
  • Business: $65 – $50 = $15, 23% of the monthly price

The commitment is the real cost of the discount. Annual is charged upfront, and a plan cancelled mid-term stays active to the end with no prorated refund.

The order of moves helps. Switching from monthly to annual takes effect at once and credits the unused part of the month, while annual to monthly waits for the next cycle.

Start monthly while you test the workflow, then switch once Descript is your editor. The subscription is still not the whole bill when the pools run short.

Additional Descript Costs to Consider

Beyond the per-editor price, a Descript bill can grow through top-up bundles on Creator and Business, extra editors up to the plan’s cap, and US sales tax where it applies; Viewer seats cost nothing.

Top ups are shared across the drive and spent only after the monthly allowance is gone, so they act as a reserve rather than a second plan. The pricing cards show the gate: the top-up line appears on Creator and Business, not on Hobbyist.

Pricing note

Hobbyist cannot buy top ups. Bridging a short month means moving to Creator, which costs $24 – $16 = $8 more per editor per month on annual billing, or $8 x 12 = $96 more a year, before any bundle is bought.

Top Up or Upgrade? The Break-Even

A top up wins for a one-month spike and for a small steady overage, while a Creator editor who needs 39 or more media hours most months pays less on Business.

A recurring need is priced at the 50-hour bundle, the cheapest top-up hour at $150.00 / 50 = $3.00, which lasts 12 months.

At 38 hours a month, Creator on annual billing plus 8 top-up hours costs $24 + 8 x $3.00 = $48, against $50 for a Business editor on annual billing with 40 hours and 1,500 credits.

At 40 hours, Creator plus 10 top-up hours costs $24 + 10 x $3.00 = $54, while Business covers 40 hours for $50.

Credits follow the same logic. On annual billing Business costs $50 – $24 = $26 more per editor per month than Creator, every month, while 1,000 top-up credits cost $80.00 once.

Upgrading for one heavy month is the costlier mistake on annual billing. An upgrade is charged at once for the rest of the term, and a downgrade waits for the end of the term. A bundle bought for a March deadline still covers a heavy July, because top ups last 12 months.

Descript’s own guidance matches this: top up for a temporary spike, upgrade if you run out every month.

How Much Does Descript Cost for Your Team?

On annual billing, Descript costs from $16 x 1 x 12 = $192 a year for one Hobbyist editor to $50 x 5 x 12 = $3,000 a year for five Business editors, before top ups and tax.

Enter your editor count, the hours of media you upload or record each month and the billing basis. The calculator shows every plan side by side and names the cheapest one that covers the need; tick 4K export or Brand Studio to rule out plans without them. It leaves out tax, top-up bundle prices and Enterprise.

The solo rows hide the sharpest comparison on the page. A solo editor on Hobbyist billed monthly pays $24 x 12 = $288 a year, exactly what Creator costs on annual billing, which triples the media hours and adds 4K.

At team size, the jump to Business is the expensive step. Three editors on Business annual would pay $50 x 3 x 12 = $1,800 a year, against $24 x 3 x 12 = $864 on Creator, so Brand Studio and dubbing must be worth that gap.

Reviewers who only comment add nothing, because Viewer seats are free.

Which Descript Plan Should You Choose?

Creator fits most weekly creators and teams of up to 3 editors; Hobbyist fits only a steady solo load under 10 hours a month, and Business fits 4 or 5 editors or a team that needs brand control and dubbing.

Two rows need no upgrade at all: Free for a one-off project and Viewer seats for reviewers. A plan that fits can still cost more than the work is worth, which is the next question.

Is Descript Worth the Price? Pros and Cons

Descript is worth paying for if you edit podcasts or talking-head video by transcript and your monthly footage stays inside the pools.

Skip it if:
you mainly generate video from prompts, need more than 5 editors without a quote, or only need meeting transcripts.

The main pro is the pool. Every included hour on Creator annual costs less than the $3.00 to $5.00 a top-up hour costs, and a pooled drive lets a busy editor borrow hours from a quiet one.

The cons are specific. Hobbyist’s missing top ups punish a creator whose output swings month to month, and Underlord’s variable credit use makes an AI-heavy month hard to budget in advance. If Camtasia is also on your shortlist, see my Camtasia pricing guide.

If the job is mostly prompt-to-video generation, credits sized per editor are the wrong unit, and my list of best-value AI video generators is the better starting point.

If you only need call or meeting transcripts, AI note takers built for meetings do that without media pools.

For a different editor altogether, my ranking of AI video editors compared by job sets Descript beside tools such as CapCut and Riverside. Before buying, read the terms that decide refunds and cancellation.

Billing, Discounts and Cancellation

Descript refunds a plan purchase within 48 hours of the invoice date and an editor seat within 7 days; cancelling or downgrading takes effect at the end of the term with no prorated refund.

  • Upgrades and added editors take effect at once and are prorated for the rest of the cycle.
  • Top-up purchases are non-refundable.
  • Hobbyist, Creator and Business are charged automatically to a credit card on your billing cycle; ACH or custom invoicing goes through the Enterprise team.
  • Each drive has its own plan and its own bill, so a second drive means a second subscription.
  • You cancel from your Descript subscription page, and the plan stays active until the term ends.

Students, educators and nonprofits can apply for special rates through a form on the pricing page, which prints no rate or end date. Descript’s plan guide lists an Education / Nonprofit Hobbyist plan with the same 600 media minutes and 400 AI credits a month as Hobbyist.

How I Verified Descript Pricing

I read Descript’s pricing page as a US visitor in both its Annual and Monthly views on October 27, 2026. Its help center pages on usage, top ups, billing, refunds, taxes, drive roles and the Legacy plan change followed on October 28, 2026. Region: United States; currency: US dollars.

Published prices and limits come straight from those pages. Calculated estimates (yearly totals, savings, cost per included hour, the break-even) are list price x editors x months, shown with their math. Editorial analysis (best for, the plan picks, the worth-it verdict) is my reading of those facts.

Descript does not publish an Enterprise price, the education and nonprofit discount rate, a credit cost per Underlord action, or a timed trial of its paid plans.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a 2-minute video cost in Descript?

A 2-minute video costs 2 media minutes of your plan’s pool when you upload or record it, not a set dollar amount. On Hobbyist that is 2 of the editor’s 600 monthly minutes. Any AI tools you apply to it add AI credits on top, depending on the tool and the length of the media.

Do unused media minutes and AI credits roll over?

No. Monthly media minutes and AI credits reset when the subscription renews, and unused ones are lost. Top-up bundles are the exception: they carry over month to month for up to a year from purchase and are spent only after the monthly allowance runs out.

Do reviewers need a paid Descript seat?

No. A Viewer seat is free and can view and comment on projects across the drive, but cannot edit, record, import or use AI features. Someone who reviews a single project can instead be invited as a project collaborator, which needs no paid seat and gives no access to the rest of the drive.

Final Pricing Verdict

Buy Creator on annual billing if you publish weekly or edit as a team of up to 3: $24 per editor per month buys 30 media hours, 4K export and access to top ups. Take Hobbyist only for a steady solo load under 10 hours a month, since it has no top ups to absorb a heavy month.

Move to Business when a fourth editor or brand control arrives, and ask for an Enterprise quote past 5 editors. Look at another tool if your work is prompt-generated video or meeting transcripts, where Descript’s media pools are the wrong unit. For more recorders and editors, see my list of the best screen recording software.
