ADP publishes two small-business payroll prices: Roll by ADP at $39 a month plus $5 per employee, and ADP for One from $42 a month for one-time annual processors. All four RUN Powered by ADP packages are sold by custom quote, so ADP payroll pricing is only half public.

This guide turns the two public prices into monthly and yearly costs at 1, 2, 10 and 25 people. It also shows what each RUN package adds and what to ask before you accept a RUN quote.

Quick pricing answer

ADP Payroll for small businesses, checked October 2026 on ADP’s US pages, in US dollars:

  • Roll: $39 per month plus $5 per employee per month, billed monthly, with no annual contract.
  • ADP for One: from $42 per month for one-time annual processors, for one employee.
  • RUN Powered by ADP: Essential Payroll, Enhanced Payroll, Complete Payroll & HR+ and HR Pro Payroll & HR, each by custom quote.
  • Free months: Roll offers three months free, and ADP offers up to 6 months free to businesses that switch payroll & HR before November 26 (terms apply).
  • For 2-10 employees who need payroll and taxes only, pick Roll: 10 employees cost $39 + $5 x 10 = $89 per month, billed monthly.
  • The caveat: no RUN package has a published price, so budget RUN only after a quote.

ADP Payroll Plans Explained

Roll and ADP for One sell payroll at a published price, while RUN’s four packages stack HR services on top of payroll and are priced per business. Each one below gets its price, its limit and the reason to move up.

ADP for One

ADP for One starts at $42 a month, but ADP ties that price to one-time annual processors, meaning businesses that process payroll once a year.

ADP for One page with the line about packages starting at $42 a month for one-time annual processors outlined
ADP Payroll for one price page, first screen, highlight added, adp.com, captured Oct 2026

ADP built it for S corps and solopreneurs: payroll for one employee, with taxes deducted and filed. There are no fixed fees and no contract, and the price rises with the services, integrations and related products you add.

The condition matters more than the number. A solo owner who pays themselves every month falls outside the $42 condition, and Roll prices that same person at $39 + $5 x 1 = $44 a month, billed monthly, with unlimited payroll.

So ADP for One fits a one-person S corp that runs a single annual payroll. An owner on a monthly salary should price Roll first and ask ADP what ADP for One costs at that frequency.

Roll by ADP

Roll costs $39 a month plus $5 per employee per month, billed monthly, and the fee buys unlimited payroll.

The same fee covers taxes calculated, deducted and paid, W-2 and 1099 workers, payroll in all 50 states, a QuickBooks Online integration and unlimited live chat support. Same-day and next-day direct deposit are available.

Roll’s real advantage over the RUN packages is the public formula: its cost scales with headcount at a printed rate. ADP for One’s $42, by contrast, is a starting price that rises with services and integrations.

Two gaps remain. Roll’s FAQ confirms it pays 1099 contractors, but the fee is written per employee, and Roll does not publish whether a paid contractor counts toward the $5.

Roll’s feature list also names garnishments, and its HR help is a GenAI chat assistant. It does not list help with compliance, State Unemployment Insurance management, ZipRecruiter or human HR support, which are the triggers to look at RUN.

RUN Essential Payroll

Essential Payroll is priced by custom quote; its card on ADP’s site shows “Get pricing” where a price would be. ADP pitches it at small businesses that need payroll, taxes and help with compliance, and RUN as a whole serves 1-49 employees.

ADP's four RUN Powered by ADP packages, each with a Get pricing link and no price

Essential’s description is close to Roll’s feature list, so hold its quote against Roll’s formula. For 10 employees Roll costs $39 + $5 x 10 = $89 a month, billed monthly, and an Essential quote above that should buy something Roll does not list.

RUN Enhanced Payroll

Enhanced Payroll is also quote-only, and it adds three things to basic payroll: ZipRecruiter, State Unemployment Insurance and a garnishment payment service. ADP’s switching page describes its SUI management tools as claim responses, benefit payments review and best-practices consulting.

Upgrade when unemployment claims or hiring volume cost you real time. Garnishments alone are a weaker reason, since Roll’s feature list already names them; ask ADP how the two services differ before you pay for Enhanced.

RUN Complete Payroll & HR+

Complete Payroll & HR+ is quote-only and adds basic HR support to everything in Enhanced. It fits an owner with no HR person who wants payroll and HR questions handled by one vendor.

Basic HR support is the one thing this package adds, so weigh it against dedicated HR software for small business before you accept the higher quote.

RUN HR Pro Payroll & HR

HR Pro Payroll & HR, the top RUN package, is quote-only too: it adds enhanced HR support and perks for you and your employees on top of Complete. The ADP Marketplace lists ADP HR Pro as the full HR package for RUN users, and its Recurring Edition shows “Login to view price”.

Like the other three packages, HR Pro shows “Get pricing” on ADP’s site, and its Marketplace edition also hides the price behind a login.

Four of the six options have no price, so the next question is what decides the number on a RUN quote.

How ADP Prices a RUN Quote

ADP names four drivers of a RUN quote: how often you run payroll, how many people you pay, how often you add or remove payees, and which services you need.

ADP adds that it will work with you to determine the right payroll set-up for your business, and its RUN package cards show “Get pricing” instead of a number.

Pay frequency is one place RUN and Roll differ. Roll charges the same $39 base fee whether you run payroll weekly or monthly, while a RUN quote treats frequency as a price input.

If a RUN quote is already in front of you, open my ADP RUN review for the verdict on the product itself.

Questions to ask before you accept a RUN quote

Ask ADP to put each line below in writing, and use Roll’s published terms as the benchmark the quote has to beat.

A quote that leaves any of these lines blank cannot be compared with Roll or with another provider’s published plan. Before any quote applies, though, ADP’s free months come first.

Does ADP Payroll Have a Free Plan or Trial?

No free plan is listed on the ADP pages checked for this guide, but all three products come with free months under ADP’s terms:

  • Roll: three months free, under Roll’s terms and conditions.
  • ADP for One: 6 months of free payroll, under ADP’s terms and conditions.
  • RUN Powered by ADP: up to 6 months free for businesses that switch payroll & HR before November 26, under ADP’s terms and conditions.

“Up to” makes six months a ceiling, so read the terms before you count on all six. The RUN offer is aimed at businesses switching from another provider, while Roll’s three months are a free trial of Roll itself.

After the free months, billing works the same way every month.

Monthly vs Annual ADP Payroll Billing

Roll bills monthly, deducting the fee from your company bank account each month, and it has no annual contract. ADP publishes no annual price for Roll or ADP for One, so there is no annual discount to weigh.

Roll does ask for 30 days’ notice to cancel, so plan any move away from Roll at least a month ahead. ADP for One states no fixed fees and no contract.

RUN is the exception: its packages are sold by quote, so ask for the contract term and the notice period in the quote itself.

Additional ADP Payroll Costs to Consider

Beyond the base subscription, ADP’s pages name a few costs that depend on your setup, plus a list of RUN items that carry no additional fee. On hidden fees, Roll’s pricing page promises “No Hidden Fees, No Surprises”, and the open items are the unpriced lines below.

If you pay several 1099 workers or run same-day pay often, ask Roll how each is billed before you set a budget.

Pricing note

ADP dates its no-additional-fee list “As of July 1, 2026” and says it is subject to change. Ask for the same items in writing when you accept a RUN quote.

With the extras known, the next step is what a real team pays per month and per year.

How Much Does ADP Payroll Cost for Your Team?

On Roll, a month costs $39 plus $5 for each employee paid that month: $39 + $5 x 2 = $49 for 2 employees and $39 + $5 x 25 = $164 for 25. ADP for One starts at $42 a month for one owner on one annual run, and RUN needs a quote.

ADP payroll cost calculator

This calculator needs JavaScript. The scenario table below gives the same estimate for typical workloads.

Enter the number of employees you pay each month, and tick the box if you run payroll more than once a year. The calculator shows Roll and ADP for One side by side, with the monthly and 12-month cost, and names the cheaper one that covers you.

RUN packages are not in it because ADP publishes no RUN price. It also leaves out sales tax, the free months and any direct deposit speed fee.

Each total is the subscription only. It leaves out wages, employer payroll taxes, benefits, insurance, direct deposit speed fees, sales tax and the free months.

At 25 employees, the per-employee fees ($5 x 25 = $125) are most of the bill, so Roll’s cost follows headcount far more than its base fee.

If Roll’s three free months apply to you, a 10-person team pays $39 + $5 x 10 = $89 in each of the 9 paid months. That is $39 x 9 + $5 x 10 x 9 = $801 in its first year.

Seasonal businesses gain the most from Roll’s billing rule, because unpaid employees are not charged. A shop paying 25 people in summer and 5 in winter pays $39 + $5 x 5 = $64 in a winter month.

Which ADP Payroll Product Should You Choose?

Roll is the pick for owners who need payroll and taxes at a published price; 25 employees is the largest team the cost table above prices. RUN earns a quote only for the services Roll’s page does not list.

A business with 50 or more employees sits outside this lineup: ADP sells payroll for 50-1,000+ employees as a separate, custom-configured service.

If you are still choosing between ADP and Gusto, compare them side by side in my Gusto vs ADP comparison.

Is ADP Payroll Worth the Price?

Roll is worth its price for a small business that needs payroll and taxes and wants a bill it can forecast, with no annual contract to sign.

RUN is worth a quote only when you need what Roll’s page does not list: Essential’s help with compliance, SUI management tools, ZipRecruiter or HR support. Skip RUN if your budget process needs a published price before a sales conversation, because none of its four packages has one.

If neither ADP product fits, my guide to the best payroll software for small business sets ADP against providers that price payroll differently.

QuickBooks Online users have a specific reason to look at Roll, since Roll integrates with QuickBooks Online. My QuickBooks Online pricing guide covers the accounting side of that pairing.

How I Verified ADP Payroll Pricing

I built this guide from ADP’s US pages, Roll’s pricing page and Roll’s FAQ, read on October 29, 2026. The region is the US, the currency US dollars, and the billing basis monthly.

Published prices (Roll’s $39 plus $5 per employee and ADP for One’s $42 starting price) come from those pages. The team totals are calculated: base fee plus $5 per employee for a month, times 12 for a year.

ADP does not publish a price for any RUN package, or for the HR Pro Marketplace edition, which asks for a login. I left out third-party estimates of RUN prices, since no ADP page states them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ADP charge per payroll run?

Not on Roll: its $39 monthly base fee includes unlimited payroll, so an extra bonus run adds nothing to the base fee. On RUN, how often you run payroll is one of the factors ADP says shape the quote. Ask whether off-cycle and bonus runs cost extra before you sign.

Can I switch from Roll to RUN later?

The Roll and RUN pages I read do not describe an upgrade path from Roll to RUN, so treat the move as a switch between two products. Roll asks for 30 days’ notice to cancel, so request the RUN quote at least a month before you want to leave. Ask ADP how your payroll history moves across.

Is ADP cheaper than Gusto or QuickBooks payroll?

Only Roll and ADP for One can be compared on price, because RUN has no public number. Set Roll’s $39 plus $5 per employee against Gusto’s pricing plans at your own headcount. Get a RUN quote before you compare any RUN package with Gusto or QuickBooks.

Final Pricing Verdict

Start with Roll unless you need RUN’s help with compliance, SUI tools, ZipRecruiter or HR support. At $39 plus $5 per employee per month, billed monthly, its cost is known before a sales call.

  • A one-person S corp that runs payroll once a year: ADP for One, from $42 a month.
  • A business with unemployment claims or ZipRecruiter hiring: request an Enhanced Payroll quote.
  • An owner without HR staff: request Complete Payroll & HR+ or HR Pro quotes, and bring the quote questions above.

Skip RUN if you need a fixed price before talking to sales, since ADP quotes every RUN package. If you pay yourself monthly, price Roll before ADP for One, whose $42 starting price covers one-time annual processors.

If your books already run on QuickBooks, check my QuickBooks Payroll pricing guide to line up its payroll option next to ADP.
